David Smith, Ph.D.
David Smith, Ph.D. is the Da Vinci Science Center’s Edward and Inez Donley Senior Director of Science and Strategy, a role in which he has served since Oct. 2013. Smith also has been the Center’s Chief Scientist since 2012 and is a member of its Leadership Team. Smith served previously from 2002-2012 as the Center’s Director of Professional Development.
Smith’s responsibilities include leading the development and implementation of the Da Vinci Science Center’s strategic plan; informing the Center’s professional development programs for teachers, which he created; ensuring the scientific accuracy of the Center’s exhibits and programs; and serving as the Center’s primary spokesperson regarding scientific and technical issues. Smith also is the Convener and Director of the STEM Valley Mentoring Coalition founded by the Da Vinci Science Center.
Smith was a 2014 recipient of the National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) Distinguished Informal Science Educator Award.
Smith is a former Associate Professor at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pa., and Director of Academic Operations for LaSalle’s Institute for the Advancement of Mathematics and Science Teaching (IAMST). Smith holds a doctorate in Geology from Stanford University in Palo Alto, Ca.
