Compass Girls Clothing Line Getting Girls Suited for Science
December 26, 2012A new clothing line based in Emmaus, Pa., is dressed up to get young women excited about science and to provide young women with inspiring learning opportunities.
The Compass Girls line was created by former Da Vinci Science Center employee Kate Heflin and Loveneet Nat. Their motivation was a frustration about seeing rocket ships and dinosaurs on boys’ clothes and cupcakes and fairies on girls’ clothes. They decided to create clothing that depicts science, technology, math, and engineering as ‘girl things.’
The company has begun selling shirts on the web and at the Da Vinci Science Center. Featuring fun phrases such as “She Digs Dinosaurs,” the shirts have been brought to life by designer Lupi McGinty of Minneapolis, Minn.
A portion of the company’s profits will be donated to STEM organizations in support of activities for girls.
