First Place in the 2013 BioScapes contest was earned by Igor Siwanowicz, a researcher from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farm Research Campus, Ashburn, Va., for his image of a floating humped bladderwort plant. The aquatic carnivorous plant digests microinvertebrates that are sucked into its trap a millisecond after they touch its trigger hairs. These traps also provide a microhabitat for single-cell green algae, predominantly desmids, which are visible in the winning photo.
