New PPL Electric Utilities Energy Zone Lit Up with Fancy Footwork

PPL Electric Utilities Energy Zone
The Da Vinci Science Center’s newest permanent exhibit area has been brought to life with some fancy footwork.

Representatives from the Center and PPL Electric Utilities celebrated the opening of the PPL Electric Utilities Energy Zone Tuesday evening with a playful battle on the area’s interactive dance floor. Made with innovative piezoelectric technology, the dance floor creates electric energy when people dance or jump on its tiles. Hand cranks along the dance floor’s edge allow friends and family members to create additional energy while a visitor dances. Visitors can battle to see who can create the most energy or dance on the floor’s tiles to answer trivia questions about energy conservation.

The dance floor and all Energy Zone exhibits explore the nature of energy and compare the energy visitors use to move their bodies with the electrical energy they use to light their homes. Additional exhibits encourage visitors to power light bulbs with their own energy, “feel” electricity, control a high-voltage electrical arc, and build electrical circuits from simple elements.

“The PPL Electric Utilities Energy Zone will be a popular and engaging experience for our visitors and equally effective in relating important concepts,” said Lin Erickson, the Da Vinci Science Center’s Executive Director and CEO. “It takes the concepts of electricity and energy and relates them to real-life experiences, such as how much they can create by dancing or how much is needed to power a light bulb. By doing so, visitors gain greater understanding of how energy impacts their lives and lifestyles.”

PPL Electric Utilities provided technical support in creating the Energy Zone – which is part of a major Da Vinci Science Center exhibit investment in its Allentown, Pa., facility announced in Aug. 2016.

“The Da Vinci Science Center is a special place in our community,” said Chris Cardenas, PPL Electric Utilities’ Vice President for Customer Services. “The new exhibit area supports the Center’s values that embrace curiosity, exploration, and active learning. We share a vision about the importance of science, technology, engineering and math in our world and for our future.”

PPL Electric Utilities provides electric delivery service to more than 1.4 million homes and businesses in Pennsylvania and ranks among the best utility companies in the country for customer service and reliability. PPL Electric Utilities is a major employer in the communities it serves. It is a subsidiary of PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL). For more information, visit www.pplelectric.com.
