Student teams from twenty-two schools in Lehigh, Northampton, and Carbon counties are discovering what is so cool about manufacturing careers through the Dream It. Do It. PA partnership’s second annual Lehigh Valley video contest.
The Dream It. Do It. PA partnership created the contest in the fall of 2013 as part of a broad regional effort to raise awareness of manufacturing careers for students in grades K-12, their adult family members and educators.
Student teams were matched with area manufacturing companies and produced short videos about them to answer the contest’s question of “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” The contest’s goal is to change the image of manufacturing and the image of career and technical education.
The Dream It. Do It. PA partnership is led by the Manufacturers Resource Center (MRC) in Bethlehem, Pa. Additional lead partners include the Da Vinci Science Center, the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute (LCTI), the Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board (LVWIB), the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School, and the Career Institute of Technology in Easton, Pa. Video contest partners include eMediaWorks and PBS39 Lehigh Valley.
The 2014 contest featured 19 entries from middle school student teams from 16 public school districts in Lehigh and Northampton counties and Sacred Regional Heart School in Allentown. The contest drew more than 123,000 website votes for its Viewers Choice Award, which was won by the team from Whitehall-Coplay Middle School.
The contest has drawn attention from groups around the United States who have similar missions. The Dream It. Do It. Pennsylvania website served as a hosting partner for a contest for schools in northern Georgia in the fall of 2014, and additional regions in Pennsylvania are planning contests of their own.
