TD Charitable Foundation Provides Support for Summer 2017 Literacy Program
The Da Vinci Science Center will offer its summer literacy program for underserved students again in 2017 with $7,500 in new support provided by the TD Charitable Foundation – the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank.
The Center’s summer literacy program is part of its efforts to combat what experts call the summer learning slide – the reverse or loss of academic skills that students may experience during their summer vacations. Educators and experts believe that the summer learning slide impacts students from low-income backgrounds especially. Industry data – including a study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, Md., from 2010 – suggests that low-income students who do not read at their grade level by the end of third grade are up to 13 times more likely to drop out of school.
The Center’s 2016 summer literacy program has been presented at Donegan Elementary School in Bethlehem, Pa. The program stimulates interest in literacy skills for students in second and third grade through enjoyable scientific investigations.
“Some of the Da Vinci Science Center’s greatest impact is made during the summer months when schools are not in session, and that impact will be bolstered in 2017 with this support from TD Charitable Foundation,” said Lin Erickson, the Center’s Executive Director and CEO. “While our programs offer a lot of informal fun, they are reinforcing important concepts and thought processes that help students remain on track with the fundamental learning they need to become successful adults and members of tomorrow’s workforce.”
The Da Vinci Science Center is a member of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s Summer Learning Coalition, an effort begun in 2015. The Center also provides scholarships to its Summer Camp programs for underserved students through additional sponsor support.
