#MySci411: Northern Lights Shine Over Northern U.S. States

The famous cosmic phenomena known as the Northern Lights is appearing this week skies above the northern area of the continental United States.

Known scientifically as an aurora borealis, the Northern Lights are a natural display of colorful light in the night sky caused disturbances in the Earth’s atmosphere brought about by flowing protons and electrons. These displays are seen most typically near the North Pole and South Pole.

A recent solar wind storm increased the amount of disturbances in the atmosphere and broadened the display so that it has been visible this week over northern areas of the continental United States. The display was visible over Pennsylvania on Tuesday evening.
