#MySci411: OraSure’s Home HIV Test Honored by TIME Magazine

OraSure Technologies Home HIV Test
The at-home HIV test created by OraSure Technologies, Bethlehem, Pa., has been named one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2012.

The company’s OraQuick Test was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2012 and is based on the HIV test that healthcare professionals have used since 2004.

The OraQuick Test detects antibodies for HIV, not the virus itself. Users swipe the test swab gently along their upper gums once, swab along their lower gums once, insert the swab inside the test tube provided, and get their results in 20 minutes.

HIV antibodies from oral fluid are collected through the swab. Once the device is inserted in to the test tube, the oral fluid mixes with the liquid and travels up the test stick.
