The Da Vinci Science Center’s Science Works 2011 celebration continues Monday by highlighting the contributions of today’s female scientists in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey.
The Center’s Women in Science Week, presented by Wells Fargo, will include Women in Science Day on Saturday, May 7, 2011, and Science Service Days from May 2-6, 2011. Science Service Days will connect today’s scientists with tomorrow’s leaders as female professionals from the Lehigh Valley present demonstrations for visiting school groups.
Women in Science Day, presented in partnership with the Philadelphia chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), will engage public visitors with fun experiments with genetics, taste-testing, materials science, and brain cells. A public panel discussion also will be held. Women in Science Day programs from 1-4 p.m. will be included with paid Center admission.
Presented by Bob and Sandy Lovett, Science Works is a Da Vinci Science Center celebration of informal science and its partners. Science Works 2011 opened Saturday with the 2011 Da Vinci Science Center Hall of Fame Awards event.
The closing day of Science Works 2011 on May 7, 2011, also will feature the premiere of the Center’s Joe’s Workshop Program from 1-4 p.m. and its 2011 Inventor program showcase from 10-11:30 a.m. The Inventor program showcase culminates this year’s series of monthly Saturday morning sessions for members in grades 4-6 that began in Oct. 2010. The young inventors will present their ideas before a panel of experts and patent attorneys.
The new Joe’s Workshop Program is for visitors ages 12 and under. The boys and girls will explore basic measuring, designing, and fastening functions with Da Vinci Science Center educator Joe Schoenly as they build a planter box for Mother’s Day.
