Calling all Da Vinci Science Center Members 

Please join us for our ever-popular, annual Halloween Members Night next Saturday, Oct. 24 from 6-7 p.m. for a fun-filled evening of family-friendly, silly-spooky, hands-on science activities and a Live Science Show! 

Gather your family in front of your computer or Zoom-enabled smart device for our 2020 annual Halloween Members Night!  We invite you to get dressed up in your costumes, enjoy a special Silly Spooky Live Science Show, and try an awesome chemistry experiment along with us – all from the comfort of your home. Space is limited, so if you plan to join us, please be sure to complete the information form below to receive your link. 

Please Note:  All memberships that were active as of March 13, 2020 will automatically be extended for the total amount of time indoor exhibit experiences at Da Vinci Science Center remain closed. Members will be informed as soon as their memberships will reactivate. Participating in this event will not impact your membership in any way; this is our gift to you! 

Details:

  • FREE to Da Vinci Science Center members!
  • Member households only.
  • Registration required (see form below).
  • You will receive a Zoom link via email upon completion of the form. 
  • Capacity will be limited to maximize viewer experience. Please only one registration per household. Multiple family members are welcome to gather around the same device, if possible.

Hands-on Activity Materials List

Catalyzed Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide (aka Elephant Toothpaste) 

This reaction can be quite messy!  Please make sure you have everything below if you plan to join us. 

Personal Protection Equipment 

  • Goggles, safety glasses, sunglasses, or even prescription glasses to protect eyes from any accidental splashes, eruptions, or spills 
  • Liquid-Resistant Gloves to protect hands from stains from Food Coloring or irritation from Hydrogen Peroxide 
  • Smock or Apron to protect clothing from stains from Food Coloring 

Equipment 

  • Erlenmeyer Flask or Empty Bottle with a Narrow Neck (like a reused plastic water bottle) to perform experiment(s) 
  • Funnel to easily transfer liquid chemicals into flask/bottle 
  • Liquid Measuring Items (like Measuring Cups or Graduated Cylinders) to measure chemical materials 
  • Tray or Large Plate with a Lip to contain reaction 
  • Plastic or Vinyl Cover to protect furniture/floor 

Materials 

  • ½ cup (120ml) 3% First Aid Hydrogen Peroxide 
  • ¼ oz (21g) Active Dry Yeast 
  • 1 TBSP (15ml) Warm Water 
  • 1 TBSP (15ml) Dish Soap 
  • 3-5 drops (~1ml) Food Coloring *Optional*
